He is very excited to be joining us in our transition to the Northern Sun and NCAA Division II.”

“I think the biggest thing that attracted me to Minot State was the community support,” he said. “Minot feels like a college town to me. That and the facilities at Minot State are exceptional. My goal is to create a culture of winning at Minot State. We want to bring in people that believe in that and have the desire to achieve that. Winning will be a big piece of what we are going to do here to create that culture and we want to extend that feeling to the community.”

It will be fun to compete against some of the top teams in the country. Also, we want Minot to be a tough place to play. We hope to grow our crowds and make this a tough building to get a win. I think it will be a little nerve-racking over the next couple of years, but it will also be a blast to take on some of those teams.”

(Jamestown, ND) -- Jamestown College will add competitive dance to its lineup of athletic offerings beginning in the 2011-12 school year.

“With the high level of participation in dance at the high school level, it makes sense to offer a program with such broad appeal,” says Athletic Director Lawrie Paulson. “Competitive dance is an emerging sport with more than 50 schools in the NAIA participating.”

The team will be made up of approximately 24 dancers and will compete for a bid into the Universal Dance Association National Championships held in January in Orlando, Fla. Fans closer to home will see the team perform at Jimmie football and basketball games and other regional events.

“This is a great opportunity for students with an interest in dance to participate in a sport they love while obtaining an excellent education,” says Tena Lawrence, Dean of Enrollment Management. “Our program is unique in this region in two ways – we are offering talent scholarships to qualified participants, and the team is coached by an individual with a background in competitive dance and who has earned a master’s degree in dance.”

Kimberly Williams has been named Dance Team Director. She is a graduate of Oklahoma City University’s Ann Lacy School of American Dance and Arts Management Master of Fine Arts program. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in dance from Lindenwood University, Saint Charles, Mo.

As a member of the Lindenwood Lion Line Dance Team, Williams competed at the National College Dance Team Championships and was a part of the 2008 National Championship team.

“I’m looking forward to giving students the chance to continue dancing through college,” she says. “We’ll hold auditions in May with the goal of performing when school starts in August.”

Williams’ dance training includes ballet, tap, jazz, modern and musical theatre. She is a sought after judge for competitions and auditions as well as for choreographing routines. She was an instructor and later assistant head instructor for Universal Dance Association, traveling and teaching high school dance camps across six states.

Williams coached the Ritenour (Mo.) High School junior varsity dance team for three years, resulting in the team’s first-place finish at the Missouri State High School Dance Competition.

She has competed regionally and nationally at Dance Champs, Spotlight Dance Cup, Stage One Productions and other competitions.

(Minot, ND) -- Minot State University and Minot’s Dream Catchers celebrated their fifth annual “Day at the Dome” in the usual fashion.

The two groups formed four teams and played an exciting two-inning game Monday night at the MSU Dome.

“We look forward to this every year,” said MSU head coach Brock Weppler. “I’m not sure who has the most fun between us and the Dream Catchers. I’m happy we could be a part of it again this year.”

The Minot Dream Catchers is a team comprised of special needs children, many of whom are wheelchair bound, organized by Michelle Bliven.

The “Day at the Dome” began five years ago as an idea for a class project by former MSU baseball player Justin Beahm. The event has grown in size, attracting nearly 60 Dream Catchers’ players in 2010 along with 40 MSU players and coaches, but the idea of having fun remains.

The teams are divided into four teams with two two-inning games played side-by-side on the Dome floor. Each batter is allowed two at-bats, not score is taken and at the end of the each inning, the final batter gets to run the bases.

“We feel this is one of the most important events the baseball team is involved with each year and one of the most important events the MSU Athletic Department is involved with,” Weppler said.

After the game, the teams shared a traditional handshake and finished the fun-filled night with pizza.

(Minot, ND) -- Minot State University’s Athletic Department and Xcel Energy are asking fans to go Green during the MSU men’s and women’s basketball games February 18 and 19 at the MSU Dome.

The week-long initiative will culminate in the MSU Athletics/Xcel Energy Green Weekend during the Dakota Athletic Conference regular season finale. Fans are encouraged to think “Green” and to wear it as the MSU Athletic Department has made the weekend a “Green Out” at the Dome.

“We would like to make this an annual event,” said MSU Athletic Director Rick Hedberg. “It is important for our students to think about what they can do to help the environment. Xcel Energy has been great to work with to get this event going. We look forward to Friday and Saturday being a ‘Green Out’ at the Dome.  We are doing some neat things to promote sustainability.  I think sporting venues across the country have been slow to get on board with recycling and we want to do our part, or at least

get the ball rolling by creating more awareness regarding sustainability.”

The initiative began on Wednesday, February 9 with residence hall competitions on MSU’s campus. During hall hours, students who contribute to the recycling program will have their name go into a drawing a gift card. The winner of the gift cards will be announced at halftime of the men’s game vs. Black Hills State on Friday.

Recycling canisters will be set up at the residence halls during the week and at all four corners of the MSU Dome floor during the two games. The canisters will be for recycling plastics and Beavers’ game programs. There will also be recycling bins placed at the gate entrances for old batteries and cell phones.

Along with title sponsor Xcel Energy, the Minot State Athletic Department, the Minot State Sustainability Committee, the MSU Student Athlete Advisory Council, M&S Concessions and the MSU residence halls have all worked to make February 18 and 19 a “Green Out” at the Dome.

(Collegeville, MN) -- Minot State University junior Deon Buhl was just a pup when he last wrestled in the NAIA National Tournament.

His second time around he’s just a little more experience – at least in life.

Buhl and Minot State are both making a comeback from a long layover from wrestling as Buhl took 13 years off from the sport, while it has been since 1990 since the Beavers sponsored the sport.

On Saturday, the Lacey, WA native became MSU’s ninth wrestler to secure a spot in the 2011 tournament by taking sixth place in the 141-pound weight class at the North Country Open here.

“There’s the headline, ‘Thirty-seven year old qualifies for nationals,’” joked MSU head coach Robin Ersland. “He had a long day. He won, lost, won two in a row and then ran out of gas. In the 5th-6th place match, you could tell he looked like a wrestler who was in his sixth match of the day.”

(Rapid City, SD) -- Malone Engineering raised over $10,000 this past weekend at the Mandy Willmore Benefit during the South Dakota Mines men's and women's basketball games against Dickinson State and Minot State.

Malone Engineering, who was the weekend game sponsor, decided to organize a number of different fundraising activities in hopes of helping sophomore Mandy Willmore, a member of the Lady Hardrocker basketball team who suffered a spinal injury last month in Hawaii.

Among the events over the weekend, the most popular was a silent auction. Local business donated items which were then auctioned off Friday and Saturday night as the games were being played. Malone Engineering also held an airplane toss and half court basketball shoot during halftime of the basketball games each night. Another local business,  Pauly’s Pizzeria and Sub Co., donated 40 pizza’s each night and money raised was also added to the funds for Willmore.

T-shirts displaying "Team Mandy: Can't stop me!" were also on sale throughout the week. All proceeds over the weekend were presented to Willmore and her family by Malone Engineering.

Willmore is currently rehabilitating from surfers myelopathy at Craig's Hospital in Denver, CO.

The Hardrockers' basketball teams went 3-1 over the weekend as the men's team defeated both Dickinson State and Minot State. The Lady Hardrocker's defeated Minot State Friday night and nearly pulled off a dramatic victory Saturday against Dickinson in some last-second heroics.

(Minot, ND) -- The Minot State University baseball program donated it’s time to help package nearly 300,000 meals for malnourished children Saturday at the Minot Municipal Auditorium.

The team was a part of a non-denominational effort under the name Feed My Starving Children foundation, which brought two truckloads of ingredients and equipment to Minot.

“We had half of the guys there from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and the other half worked from 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. It was hard work, but it was for a good cause,” said MSU head baseball coach Brock Weppler. “The packages we were making were going to children in Haiti that may not know where their next meal is coming from. Anytime you can get involved with something like this it is worth it. It’s good from the team, the school and the community.”

MSU baseball helped package up food in vacuum-sealed bags filled with rice, soy products, vegetables, vitamins, minerals and chicken flavoring – enough for six one-cup servings. The meals are designed to provide complete nutrition, needing only water to complete.

The boxes are destined for more than 60 countries around the world with nearly a third going to Haiti. Initially, Minot was to package 1000,000 meals, but far exceeded the estimate to reach 300,000 meals.

“We were happy to be able to help. Any time you can do something like this, you walk away feeling pretty good,” Weppler said.

Feed My Starving Children is a volunteer organization that was founded in 1987 and has three permanent packing sites in Minneapolis and one near Chicago.

(Dickinson, ND) – When the final whistle blows Sunday at the Dacotah Bank DAC Bowl at the FargoDome, a DAC football champion or champions will be decided.  In different scenarios, the football title could belong to one team, two teams or even four teams.

If Dickinson State avenges their lone loss of the season to Black Hills State and South Dakota Mines loses to Minot State, the Blue Hawks will win the conference crown outright or if the Yellow Jackets beat the Blue Hawks and the Hardrockers top the Beavers, SDM is the outright conference champion.

If both the Blue Hawks and the Hardrockers win their bowl games, the two will share the conference title.  If the Yellow Jackets and the Beavers defeat the Blue Hawks and Hardrockers, the four teams will share the championship.

In the previous ten seasons of DAC football, there have been four seasons with co-champions (2000, 2004, 2005, 2009) and two seasons with three teams sharing the conference crown (2002, 2007), but four teams have never shared a conference championship.

(Madison, SD) -- The Dakota State University Trojans had a successful 'Think Pink' campaign during athletic events this past week.  The Trojan volleyball and football teams along with the student group called "DSU Colleges against Cancer" were involved in the event.  'Think Pink' helps raise awareness about breast cancer and other types of cancers during the month of October.  This one way that DSU continued their growth in their NAIA Champions of Character initiative program.

The DSU volleyball team was involved in the event on Oct. 20 in a home match against their in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan.  Each player was designated to honor or play in memory of a person(s) afflicted with cancer.  Individual posters with the player's picture, along with whom they were playing for were posted on the DSU Fieldhouse wall.  Baked goods were sold during the match to raise funds for cancer awareness.  The Trojan volleyball team wore pink uniforms during the match.

Marva Jerke, a breast cancer survivor, was honored to do the first serve of the match.  Jerke has been with Dakota State for 19 years and is a Program Assistant II at the physical plant.

(Rapid City, SD) -- October is breast cancer awareness month and the South Dakota School of Mines women’s volleyball team is doing its part to support the cause by holding a “Pink Out” night during the Lady Hardrockers volleyball match against Mayville state Saturday at the King Center in Rapid City.

“The purpose of this obviously is to promote breast cancer awareness and raise some money for the American Cancer Society,” said Lady Hardrocker head volleyball coach Tiffany Mastin-McCampbell. “We are going to sell t-shirts and take donations and then give the proceeds to the charity.”

Both SD Mines and Mayville State volleyball players will show their support by wearing pink warm-up shirts and both teams’ coaching staffs will wear pink as well. The SD Mines volleyball program asks all fans to wear pink to show their support. The Lady Hardrockers will also be asking for donations and selling pink t-shirt at $10 each. All the money the team raises Saturday will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

“This is a great cause. A lot of volleyball teams do it across the country to raise awareness, but it’s also very personal to me,” Mastin-McCampbell said. “It’s something that I like to promote and do.”

Mastin-McCampbell’s mother Karen Mastin has been fighting cancer in one form or another for the past 10 years.

“My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer about seven years ago. She had the mastectomy, went into remission and had been doing fantastic,” Mastin-McCampbell said. “But in the last month (the cancer) has come back. This time they found it in her lungs. That’s what my family is dealing with right now. It’s just something that is going to be a life-long process for my mom as well as a lot of other breast cancer survivors.”

Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in women. In the most recent survey (2006) 191,410 women were diagnosed with breast cancer and 40,820 women died from it. Except for skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women.

SD Mines junior Madisen Lane, who is an outside hitter for the Hardrocker volleyball team knows all too well what the disease is capable of.  Frankie Olson, a 1982 graduate of SD School of Mines and close family friend of Lane’s was diagnosed with breast cancer over a year ago. Last July, Olson had a mastectomy and has been in remission since then.

“I was really upset about it. I cried when I first found out,” Lane said about Olson’s cancer. “She is one of those people that is always happy and upbeat and for her to have to go through that is kind of sad.

“It was very much a relief that she was able to beat it, but at the same time I also know that it’s possible for the cancer to come back and it could happen again.”

Mastin-McCampbell stressed that people need to know about the disease and ways to prevent and detect it early. She added that college athletics is the perfect platform to get the message to the masses.

“Anything the Lady Hardrockers can do to inform and raise awareness in the community and contribute to the cause is well worth it,” the head coach added. “Once you are affected by it personally, regardless of family or friends, it is something that needs to be promoted --- especially in the venue of female athletics. People really do need to be aware of what cancer does and how it can have a lasting effect.”

Lane agreed with her coach and was very willing to help get the word out about breast cancer as it also affected her on a personal level.

“I think it’s really helpful to get the message out there, but it’s really important to me now because I’ve had someone close to me go through it,” Lane said.

“Frankie is a beacon of hope for me. She still has a smile on her face every day --- and throughout the whole experience she was very positive. I am really happy she got over having cancer and it really gave me hope.”

The Dakota Athletic Conference match between the Lady ‘Rockers and Comets is set to start at 3 p.m.

October 12, 2010

Emard entered the coaching ranks at Hutchinson Community College working with infielders, outfielders and hitters. He continued his coaching career with the Billings Royals, leading them to the 2005 Montana American Legion State Championship.

“Andy will provide us an opportunity to have a smooth transition with the leadership of our baseball program,” said interim athletic director Tim Daniel. “He has a great baseball background, with countless experience at the collegiate and high school ranks, both as a coach and player. Andy will be a tremendous asset to DSU baseball given his success and familiarity with baseball in our community and the surrounding region. We are happy to have him on board.”

The program is aimed at tackling childhood obesity and brings together the NFL, multiple national partners, national Public Service Announcements, online programs and locally as part of the NFL’s in-school, after-school and team-based programs.

Stanley school was one of seven finalists nationally for the NFL Play 60 and one of the requirements was a “Football Day” at their school. That is where MSU football became involved.

“We had a great time showing the elementary students how we did certain form running drills and core strengthening exercises,” said MSU head football coach Paul Rudolph. “We got involved because of some hometown athletes and it being my hometown and our proximity.”

Members of the Beavers team and coaching staff lectured and demonstrated different activities to a packed house at Stanley Elementary School. The players worked out with selected students during the drills.

“It was an active setting,” Rudolph said of the drills. “We got all grade levels involved.”

The NFL Play 60 Campaign kicked its 2010 season off with a NFL Play 60 Youth Football Festival, part of the NFL’s celebration to kick off the 2010 season in New Orleans last week.

(Rapid City, SD) -- The South Dakota School of Mines women’s basketball team is at it again. After logging more than 500 hours of community service last season, the Lady Hardrockers picked right up where they left off during this brand new school year (classes started Tuesday) by teaming with the United Way to participated in the “Day of Caring” program.

Several members of the Lady Hardrocker b-ball team volunteered to help stain a deck and paint a house on the outskirts of Rapid City Thursday afternoon.

The student-athletes worked side-by-side with other volunteers from the United Way to accomplish the task. The “Day of Caring” program was established in 1992 by the United Way-Thomas Jefferson Area to promote the spirit and value of volunteerism, increase the awareness of local human service agencies and schools and demonstrate what people working together for the community's good can accomplish.

“This was a great opportunity for our student-athletes to get out in the community and do some good,” said Lady Hardrocker head coach Barb Felderman. “The community of Rapid City does so much for our student-athletes. Through the United Way and other volunteer programs, it a chance for us to give something back.”

(Dickinson, ND) -- On Tuesday, August 3, at a meeting comprised of presidents, athletic directors, and coaches, members of the NAIA-affiliated Dakota Athletic Conference voted to move to plan for a five-team schedule and conference beginning July 1, 2011.  This decision effectively speeds up the timeframe recently established with the applications from current DAC members Black Hills State University and the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology being formally accepted to candidacy by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).  With BHSU and SDSM&T moving forward with their NCAA application, the five-school schedule would have ordinarily been implemented on July 1, 2012; yesterday’s decision essentially serves to move up the scheduling change by one year.

Dr. Steve Shirley, president of Valley City State University and the current president of the DAC Board of Directors commented, “This is a time of transition for the DAC.  The NAIA is a strong association with nearly 300 member colleges and universities, and the five institutions have declared their commitment to the NAIA and look forward to beginning the new schedule.  We wish BHSU and SDSM&T well in their future paths, but are also excited to explore a new direction with new possibilities as we focus on the terrific competition and long-term, historic rivalries among our five member schools.”

The DAC and its member institutions are affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Dakota State University (SD), Dickinson State University, Jamestown College, Mayville State University, and Valley City State University are the five member institutions who will begin with the new scheduling effective in fall 2011.  Coaches and athletic directors will begin the process of planning for the schedules under the new format immediately.

(Dickinson, ND) -- Dickinson State University named Kristen Fleury the new head coach of softball and assistant director of athletics. She begins her new position Aug. 2.

A defensive specialist, Fleury has served as the interim head softball coach since 2009. Prior to that, she served as assistant coach for the Blue Hawks. A native of San Jose, Calif., Fleury attended nearby West Valley Junior College (Saratoga) from 2003-05 where she twice helped the Vikings claim 3rd place finishes in the state. In 2005, she was named to the All-Coast Conference 2nd team.

Fleury transferred to Dickinson State in 2005, and, in two years, she started 90 games at third base for the Blue Hawks. Her .353 career batting average helped DSU to the 2006 and 2007 DAC championship and DAC Tournament championship. Fleury was a first-team All-DAC selection in 2006 and 2007.

Fleury graduated from DSU in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in University Studies with minors in coaching and sociology.

“I want to thank Dickinson State and the community of Dickinson for their support and for putting their trust in me to lead this softball program,” Fleury said. “I am extremely fortunate to work with great people and athletes here in Dickinson and am excited to continue to lead this program at the national level.”

(Madison, SD) -- Dakota State University’s Athletic Director Gene Wockenfuss announces the hiring of Scott Hortness as the new head baseball coach.  He replaces Dean Berry, who left earlier this summer to take a position at Northern State.

Hortness was a top assistant baseball and pitching coach at Campbellsville University in Kentucky since 2002.  He helped the team capture the regular season championship four times and won the conference tournament six times.  Campbellsville has been ranked nationally six of the last seven seasons and qualified for the NAIA World Series in 2009.

“I want to thank Gene Wockenfuss, the search committee and Dakota State University for putting their trust in me,” said Hortness, “and thank you to Campbellsville University and Beauford Saunders for treating me so well for nine years.”

Hortness is originally from Parker, S.D.  He has a masters and bachelors in education from Northern State University.  Hortness had been assistant baseball coach at Dakota Wesleyan, University of South Dakota and Northern State.  He has numerous years of experience in coaching from youth to amateur levels.

“I’m elated that Scott Hortness has accepted the position as DSU’s head baseball coach,” stated Wockenfuss.  “Scott brings a wealth of experience from his very successful winning programs.  He’s a local South Dakota guy from Parker that attended DSU and played baseball until DSU’s mission change and the sport was temporarily discontinued, then he transferred to Northern State.”

“It was obvious from the start of the process that Scott is very passionate about his time spent at DSU and believes that the baseball program can be elevated to a consistent competitor at the national level,” said Wockenfuss.

Hortness will also be an instructor in the College of Education at DSU.

“The growth and development that we are discussing not only will affect the baseball program but the entire university and community of Madison,” added Hortness.

“Achieving those goals will take the cooperation, communication, organization and patience of many people.  I am looking forward to being a part of this challenge.”

(Rapid City, SD) -- South Dakota School of Mines student-athletes do not have a lot of spare time during their normal day of being a student and a collegiate athlete. Things such as studying, going to class, practice, traveling and competition make up a large portion of their daily activities. But despite their time demands, Hardrocker student-athletes found time to devote countless hours and energy to “give back” to the community during the recent academic year. This often meant leaving the comfort of their dorm rooms and venturing out into Rapid City to participate in a variety of community service projects.

“One of the very important initiatives of President Wharton and South Dakota School of Mines as a whole has been for the institution to become more involved with the community,” said Hardrocker Athletics Director Dick Kaiser.

A total of 218 Hardrocker student-athletes and staff members volunteered their time over the past year in which they logged 2,115 hours of community service.

Kaiser indicated, “The number of individuals, the number of hours and the various activities emulating from the student-athletes, coaches and athletic administrative staff within our athletic department was a tremendous effort to accomplish a portion of that goal,” Kaiser said.

“Many of our student-athletes and coaches take great pride in connecting with the community of Rapid City. It was an absolute pleasure to watch the various interactions, especially with the youth, and know that we were making a positive difference in someone’s life that day, even if it was only for an hour or two,” Kaiser added.

Activities the Hardrockers were involved in included: Big Brothers-Big Sisters; YMCA youth programs; a Red Cross blood drive; Christmas programs for kids; Breast Cancer Awareness; hosting a Lions Club Eye Bank awareness night; hosting a free track and field camp for local kids; help organize and run a youth volleyball camp; mentoring an after school reading program; and the entire department helped plant trees around the SD Mines campus on Earth Day.

“We obviously feel that community service is a necessary and vital part of the entire educational experience at South Dakota School of Mines,” Kaiser said.

“It is our desire to embed a community service mind-set that will stay with each of our student-athletes long after they graduate. Our coaches and student-athletes were challenged last fall to become more actively engaged within the area of community service in whatever way they so chose. I am extremely proud of the effort that was made by everyone within the athletic department to accomplish what I hope is just the beginning step of increased interaction in the future.

(Madison, SD) -- Dakota State University’s Athletic Director Gene Wockenfuss announces the hiring of Michael Nekuda as the head men’s and women’s cross country coach and the head women’s track coach.

Nekuda was an assistant coach for the DSU cross country team when they earned their first Dakota Athletic Conference title in 2009.  He left to become the distance track and field coach at Laramie County School District in Cheyenne, WY. He returns to DSU following a successful year at Laramie where he coached the women to the state indoor championship and accumulated 7 all-state performances and 4 state individual champions.

Wockenfuss says Nekuda’s past experience with the DSU team is an asset.  “Mike was part of the recruitment process for the current team, and has a similar training philosophy to former Coach Trent Mack.”  Nekuda replaces Mack, who left earlier this month to take a position in Ohio.

Nekuda has a masters in human performance and physical education from Adams State College in Alamosa, CO. He earned an undergraduate degree in physical education from Black Hills State University, where he ran cross country and track.

“I am excited to start the cross country season, and am honored to coach such dedicated student athletes.   I fully accept the responsibility to lead this program and continue the winning ways of DSU,” states Nekuda.
